Under the perch where the Old Man of the Mountain cast his stony gaze for centuries, drilling equipment was rumbling this week, as long augers skewered into the ground.
Ken Smith and Matt Stone of New Hampshire Borings in Londonderry and Mirsad Alihodzic of GZA GeoEnvironmental in Manchester were in the Notch for most of this week drilling a series of test borings under the land where the massive granite memorial to the Old Man will begin to take shape next summer.
